XXII. Assembling the Cast - Trest the Gen-Mod Brute

     Tracted life is a desperate struggle. Trapped in constant state of poverty the workers make dreadful bargains to balance their debts. The Gen-Mod program is one of those options. Volunteers undergo intensive medical and scientific procedures to produce tailor made children. At birth, they are taken away from their parents to trade-based orphanages that monitor and enhance physical and mental development through training and indoctrination. Trest is a result of the Brute mod program designed to create living tools to take the place of heavy equipment.
     Despite the term "Brute", Trest is compassionate, thoughtful, and bright. The endless supply of steroids and drugs meant to tether him to his makers did not suppress his will to learn. His understanding of his life has fostered resentment and a burning will to break free. He knows withdrawal and dependency could kill him and though he feels great loyalty to his crew he also envies their natural humanity. In spite of the drugs in his system that dull his thoughts and feelings, he knows freedom will most likely be in death. If it secures true freedom for his friends, it will be a worthy sacrifice. Trest is a rare friend in that regard, making him beloved by the crew members who have taken the time to get to know him.

I Wanna Be Your Dog: Canines in DCC

Last year I started a Dungeon Crawl Classics group with my friends. For those that don't know, Dungeon Crawl Classics is meant to be D&D like it is 1975, and touts the catch phrase, "Deadliest Game Alive". During Character Creation one of the characters in our 0-level funnel came up as a herder with a herding dog. The dog, Fetch, has outlived their herder master, and became a beloved Character in a very lethal game. Not surprisingly, the players pushed for Fetch to have the ability to advance. Here is the first draft of the rules if you are interested in my take on Canine Player Characters in DCC.
